What do you eat for breakfast? Maybe coffee, toast, cereal, some fruit, or possibly nothing at all. It is Very important to start your day off right. How you start your day will determin how you feel and play a role in the decisions you will make for the rest of the day! Breakfast is probably the most important meal of the day! Breakfast should consist of whole foods, it is wise to include some fruits and vegetables, a healthy fat and some protein. It is also a good idea to eat a variety of food, not always eating the same thing every morning. This will be sure to help you to get a balanced nutrient intake. If you are a cereal eater lets leave that boxed cereal on the store shelves. These cereals have lost all the nutrients that your body needs through the processing they experience. Then man made nutrients are added back into the cereal along with sugar, additives and preservatives that allow the product to have optimal flavour and a longer shelf length. In all honesty these cereals have become a "food like" substance. Not the best choice for your valuable self! Instead choose a whole grain cereal that you can easily make into a porridge. So easy to do and you can even prepare a large batch to last you and your family for multiple days in a week! (Plus buying in bulk is cheaper than the boxed stuff!) Choose your whole grains. I like buckwheat, millet, amaranth, steel cut oats, quinoa & rice. These are the whole grains that I keep in my cupboard, this way I can choose different mixtures. Measure some whole grains into a glass bowl, add warm water to cover, add a tsp of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar and let sit on your counter over night. In the morning put it on the stove to cook slowly, add some raisins or other dried fruit if you want sweetness. Once its cooked divide into dishes and add your favorite toppings......fruit, coconut milk or homemade nut milk, coconut oil, nut or seed butters, flax, hemp or chia, soaked nuts and seeds, plain goats yogurt, and if you need that extra sweet then add a small amount of honey or pure maple syrup. With all these options your breakfast will never be the same! This breakfast along with a healthy fat added to it will give your body the nutrients it needs, the fat your brain needs to stay clear, and it will help you get through that mid morning hunger slump! Give it a try for a few weeks! You won't regret it! Enjoy!
